He said not only Bangladesh but also the neighbouring countries are largely dependent on the Bay of Bengal for their economic prosperity.
The chief adviser said this in a message on the occasion of ‘World Hydrography Day-2025’ on Friday (June 20).
He called upon the hydrographic professionals to work with more professionalism, skill and dedication to build a complete hydrographic database of the country’s maritime boundary.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus said an effective and sustainable maritime policy should be developed through accurate mapping of the seabed to strengthen and enrich the foundation of Bangladesh’s economy.

He said the present interim government is working towards transforming the country into a manufacturing-oriented and regional economic hub. Dr. Yunus said there is no alternative to detailed, up-to-date and accurate hydrographic data to use marine resources more effectively to achieve this goal.
He said the Bangladesh Navy’s hydrographic division is working relentlessly to conduct hydrographic survey of Bangladesh’s coastal areas and maritime boundaries, prepare charts, ensure the safety of all ships, and exchange information and data according to international standards. The activities of the Hydrographic Department are very important in determining our Mahisopan territory and developing the Sunil economy, especially in accordance with the United Nations Law of the Sea.

The chief adviser said he was happy to know that ‘World Hydrography Day’ is being celebrated in Bangladesh like every year. He extended his heartiest greetings and best wishes to all concerned, including the Bangladesh Navy, on the occasion.

The role of this division is also very important in determining the maritime zone of Bangladesh as per the United Nations Law of the Sea and in the development of the maritime economy.
He hoped that in addition to ensuring military and naval security, the hydrographic department would play a more active role in seaport development, fisheries conservation, oil and gas exploration and coastal disaster management.
